In todays video I test drive the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i alongside my newly purchased 2020 Toyota GR Supra!!
Both of these cars are built side by side in Austria by BMW. So yeah... the new Supra is technically a BMW underneath.
There are certainly many similarities between the new Supra and Z4. They use the same engines, transmissions, infotainment, chassis and much more!
While the interior of the Supra is all BMW switch gear, you can tell it is older materials compared to the Z4, which has the latest BMW parts. Also, the Z4 has a more premium interior with added stitching, more leather parts, aluminum buttons and accents, and more colors on the gauges. The new Supra is toned down with similar seats, but less leather accents with more plastic trim and buttons.
Performance wise the Supra hands down is better! It has more power and sharper handling and brakes! The center mounted tach and gear indicator combined with the low roofline give it that hunkered down performance feel. The Z4 feels more open and has better luxury aspects and refinement.
The Z4 handles great on the back roads and I have no complaints with it. Also features a super refined and comfortable ride with a forgiving suspension.
The Supra has more wind noise and road noise and a much harsher ride. You can tell the Z4 is set up to be a fantastic grand touring convertible sports car, while the Supra is geared toward more hard core track driving or drifting.
I honestly did not feel like I was in the same car. You can tell they are in the same family, but they drive so different that you can see the performance tuning by Toyota in the Supra vs the Luxury tuning in the Z4.
